Age matters when it comes to alarms. Even if your alarms still appear to work, sensors become less sensitive over time.
Here’s how to tell if the detectors in your home are still good.
Remove the alarm from the wall or ceiling.
Look at the back of the alarm for the date of manufacture.
Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from the date of manufacture. Combo smoke/CO alarms should be replaced after 5-7 years (depending on the model).
Put the alarm back on the ceiling or wall if it is less than 10 years old.
Replace alarm(s) older than 10 years with new units.
Repeat the process with all alarms in your home.
