HOW IT WORKS

How a generator install works

A standby generator sits outside on a pad, runs on natural gas or propane, and connects to your home through an automatic transfer switch. When utility power drops, the switch senses it, the generator starts, and power transfers over in seconds. When the grid comes back, it switches back and shuts itself down.

1

Free walkthrough

An electrician looks at your panel, your service and what you want running during an outage, then gives you written options to choose from.
2

Sizing and placement

We size the generator to your real needs and pick a spot that meets clearance rules and keeps noise away from bedrooms.
3

Permit and install

We pull the permit, set the transfer switch and wire everything to code. Your gas or propane hookup is coordinated with a qualified fuel provider.
4

Inspection and startup

The inspector signs off, we start the system, run a test and show you exactly how it works.
WHAT AFFECTS THE COST

What affects the cost of a backup generator

Every home is different, so we quote after we see yours. These are the things that move the number most.

What you want to run

Backing up a few essentials takes a smaller unit than running the whole house, including air conditioning or a hot tub.

Your panel

An older or full panel may need an upgrade before a transfer switch can be added.

Distance and placement

The farther the generator sits from the panel and fuel source, the more wire and trenching it takes.

Fuel supply

Natural gas or propane, and whether your meter or tank can handle the added load.

Surge protection

Adding whole-home surge protection is a smart pairing, and it changes the package.

Site conditions

Slopes, rock, landscaping and access all affect how the pad goes in.
SIGNS YOU NEED ONE

Is a standby generator right for your home?

If two or more of these sound like you, a generator is worth a closer look.

  • ✓You lost food, heat or water in the last big outage
  • ✓You are on a well, or your basement relies on a sump pump
  • ✓Someone in the home uses medical equipment that needs power
  • ✓You work from home and cannot afford to lose internet
  • ✓You travel and want the house protected while you are away
  • ✓You live where power lines run through trees or open, windy country
LOCAL NOTES

Backup power for the Pikes Peak region

Palmer Divide and mountain storms

Monument, Woodmoor, Palmer Lake and Black Forest sit high and catch heavy snow and wind. Woodland Park and the foothills see storms that roll in fast.

Fire-season shutoffs

During extreme fire danger, utilities may shut off power to whole areas for safety. A standby generator keeps your home running until it comes back.

Wells and heat in rural areas

Out in Black Forest, Falcon and Peyton, no power often means no water and no furnace blower. Those are the first circuits we plan around.

Our elevation

Engines make less power at altitude, so a generator has to be sized for where we live, not for sea level.

We install backup generators across Colorado Springs, Monument, Black Forest, Broadmoor, Flying Horse, Briargate, Falcon, Fountain and Woodland Park.

PERMITS AND CODE

Generator permits in El Paso County

A standby generator needs a permit and inspection. We handle the paperwork, schedule the inspection and meet the inspector, so you do not have to.

Code sets how far the unit must sit from windows, doors and vents, how the transfer switch connects to your panel, and how the wiring is protected outdoors. Getting this right is what keeps exhaust out of your home and keeps line workers safe when the grid is down.

If you have a portable generator, never plug it into a dryer outlet or backfeed your panel. It can hurt you, your family or a lineworker. A licensed electrician can tell you the safe way to connect it.

PAIRS WELL WITH

Goes great together

Backup power works best alongside these services, planned together on one walkthrough.

Powerworx Surge Protection

FAQ

Backup generator questions

Don't see yours? Call 719-659-4715 and talk to someone who actually knows electrical.

What size generator do I need?+

It depends on what you want to run during an outage. We look at your home and your must-haves and size it so it is not too small or oversized.

How fast does a standby generator turn on?+

Within seconds. The automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the generator and moves your home over to it on its own.

Do I need a panel upgrade?+

Sometimes. Older or full panels may not have room for a transfer switch. We will tell you during the walkthrough, and our Complete Power Package covers it.

Can I back up the whole house or just some circuits?+

Either. Some homeowners back up the essentials like heat, fridge and well pump. Others want everything. We size the generator to match your choice.

How long does install take?+

Most installs take one to two days once permits are approved. We handle the permit and schedule the inspection.

Why add surge protection?+

The switch between utility and generator power, and the utility coming back on, can create spikes. Surge protection keeps your electronics safe through it.

Is a portable generator a safer budget option?+

It can help, but it never starts on its own and it must be connected the right way. Never backfeed a panel or plug into a dryer outlet. Ask us about the safe way to connect one.

Does a generator need maintenance?+

Yes. Generators need regular service to start reliably. Ask about adding generator checks with our Annual Care Plan.
