THE BASICS

Level 1 vs Level 2 home EV charging

Most EVs come with a cord you can plug into a regular outlet. That is Level 1. A Level 2 charger is what most people mean when they say home charger. We install ChargePoint home chargers and other Level 2 chargers.

Level 1: a regular outlet

Uses a standard 120-volt outlet. It adds only a few miles of range per hour, which can work for short commutes or a plug-in hybrid.

Level 2: a 240-volt charger

Runs on 240 volts, like a dryer or range. It charges several times faster than Level 1, so most drivers can plug in at night and leave with a charged car.

LOAD CHECK

Can my panel handle an EV charger?

A Level 2 charger is one of the biggest loads in a home. Before we quote, an electrician runs a load check so we know your panel and service can handle it alongside everything else you run.

If there is room, the install is straightforward. If things are tight, you see the options in writing before any work starts. Leave the panel to us. We check it at the walkthrough.

  • Your panel and service size
  • Open spaces for a new breaker
  • Big loads you already run, like a range, dryer, AC or hot tub
  • The charger you picked and what circuit it needs
  • How far the panel is from where you park
WHERE IT GOES

Garage, outdoor and detached-garage EV charger installs

Every charger gets its own dedicated circuit, run cleanly from the panel to where you park.

Attached garage

The most common spot. The charger mounts on the wall near where you park, often with a short run from the panel.

Outdoors or in the driveway

We use a charger and fittings rated for outdoor use, and mount it where snow shovels and plows will not hit it.

Detached garage or shop

Power has to reach the building first. That may mean a new feeder or a subpanel, and Colorado 811 marks underground utilities before any digging.

PANEL IS FULL?

Smart panels and load management for EV charging

A full or older panel does not have to stop you from charging at home. We show you the options that fit your home.

Load management

Some chargers and devices can limit charging when the rest of the house is using a lot of power. It can help a tight service make room for an EV.

SPAN smart panel

See and control every circuit, including the charger, from your phone. Works with generators, batteries and EV chargers. See SPAN smart panels

Panel or service upgrade

When the load check says you need more room, a new panel sized for what you plan to add next. See panel upgrades

Surge protection

Your car and charger are a big investment. Whole-home surge protection at the panel helps protect them both. See surge protection

COLD-WEATHER NOTES

Charging an EV through a Colorado Springs winter

Cold affects range

EV batteries lose some range in cold weather and can charge more slowly when they are cold. Charging at home every night helps you start each day full.

A garage helps

Parking and charging in a garage keeps the battery out of the worst of the cold.

Warm up while plugged in

Many EVs can warm the cabin and battery while still plugged in, so you use power from the house instead of your range.

PRICING

What affects EV charger installation cost

We don't guess over the phone. You get an exact written price before work starts. What moves it:

The charger you choose

ChargePoint or another Level 2 charger, and the circuit it needs.

Distance from the panel

How far the circuit runs to the garage, driveway or detached building.

Your panel

Whether it has room, or needs load management, a smart panel or an upgrade.

The location

Indoor, outdoor or detached-garage installs each need different materials.

PERMITS AND LOCAL NOTES

EV charger permits in El Paso County and nearby

Permits, in plain words

A new EV charger circuit needs a permit and an inspection. We pull the permit with whichever office covers the job, whether that's the Pikes Peak Regional Building Department, Douglas County, Teller County or the State of Colorado, and schedule the inspection. Someone just needs to be home to let the inspector in.

Rebates and credits

Rebates and tax credits for home chargers change over time. We will help you check what rebates may apply before you buy.
